“How do I take more time off away from tech this year”, I ask myself with an eye on the Stephen Curry “Underrated” documentary on Apple TV+ and another on the screen of my MacBook Air typing things up without always looking at the keyboard.
I spend thousands of hours using technology every year constantly locked into my phone, my laptop and TV, and I am none the wiser.
I have taken the first step in the direction of weaning myself off tech by putting my mobile phone away to bed in a different room circa 7pm every night. It’s not all perfect, and I fall off the waggon often. Nevertheless, I made the decision to tuck it away for the evening after I noticed that it had become an extension to my right hand, I picked it up an average of 50 times a day and succumbed to the endless scroll of doom way too easily, way too often.
Technology and I have had a complex relationship since high school when I used to study with the radio switched on, changing it up to listen to my favourite cassette tapes back and forth.
I got used to getting things done with background noise a long time ago as a result, however I believe the plates have turned. The background noise has taken over as the leading voice, always distracting me, always pointing out what I should be watching next, and I am the one entertaining it.
And so, I am looking for ways to part ways and avoid becoming a small tentacle, alongside billions of other tentacles, headed up by this giant technological and data octopus. Hoping I will make it.
